Happy Birthday, Jack!! August 24, 2008

Jack then and now....

Jack's birthday "cake."

Here is Jack's Asian outfit that Stephanie gave us when he was first born. He wore it to church in honor of his 1st Birthday.

For Jack's 1st birthday, we had an "East meets West" party. So we ate macaroni and cheese and rice. (Get it?)
In the traditional Korean first birthday, the baby dresses up in the traditional Korean Clothes. Guests bring him gifts of gold. Jack didn't receive gold but he did get a yellow Leap Frog learning bus which he really loves. (However I can't get the song "The wheels on the bus go round" out of my head.)
Part of the ceremonies include laying out various items in front of him, and whichever he reaches for first foretells his future.
Items are:
Book which means he'll be a scholar
Rice- means he'll be an official
Money- He'll have wealth
Spool of thread- long life
He technically reached for the book first which I guess means he'll be a scholar but I wasn't finished laying out all the items when he grabbed the book. Once I laid everything out and had him crawl over to the items he grabbed the bowl of rice. Maybe that means he'll be an official scholar?
The photo below is of he and cousin Jasmine (also dressed in a Korean dress.) He's really not upset that he's having to wear funny looking clothes, he was just ready to eat and ready for a nap. Or maybe he was upset at having to wear funny looking clothes. He never really said.

At one year (and 3 weeks now) here are some things he can do:
-Pull himself up to standing position.
-Says: Dadda, Mama, dog, night-night, bye-bye, uh-oh and we think he's saying Jack but it comes out "Da" so we're not really sure.
-Can do sign language for: food, more, milk, all done, water and poopy
-Has three more top teeth coming in plus one molar on the bottom
